Preliminary data from the Statistical office ISTAT showed that consumer prices in Italy continued to decline in August, extending the streak to seven consecutive months.
The consumer price index decreased in August by 0.1 percent per annum, which coincided with the change in the last month. Economists had expected prices to remain unchanged. Excluding energy and unprocessed food, core inflation decreased to 0.4 percent in August from 0.6 percent in the previous month.
On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose in August by 0.2 percent, slower than the 0.3 percent increase that economists had expected.
However, the harmonized index of consumer prices measure of inflation of the EU countries – has not changed in August, after falling 0.2 percent in July. It was predicted that figure will drop to 0.1 percent. In monthly terms, the index also remained unchanged in August, while economists had forecast a fall of 0.1 percent.
